Check marks and other unicode stuff

Only now decided to put my class attendance sheets into OpenOffice.org, and so the question arises: how do I put a check mark into a document? I could just mark it with an X but the oomph just isn't there. I want a right and proper check mark!

Apparently, the answer lies in Unicode. A ✓ is unicode u2713, and a ✔ is unicode u2714. Believe it or not, they have their own Wikipedia entry. But how to enter them?

Just press Ctrl+Shift+U, then the Unicode number. Try it!
