IANADD, or I Am Not A Database Designer, but I am trying to learn the ropes. Apart from the books and usual resources, I am finding a design tool like MySQL Workbench very helpful. MySQL Workbench, the successor to fabFORCE's DBDesigner, is still in beta but it's already plenty functional. It's a great introductory tool.
